As an avid rabbit owner here in Singapore, I have personally experienced the emotional depth, companionship, and joy that these cherished pets can provide a family. When Covid-19 hit, the surge of rabbit ownership shone a bright light on the loving bond between humans and these animals. My precious bunnies, faithful through the lockdown, kept both me and my family sane and fulfilled. Yet, it was amidst this difficult period, it occurred to me that these very creatures, who played such a significant role in maintaining our mental health, were now being sold for meat in the neighbourhood!

In Singapore, rabbits are regarded as domestic pets, and their emotional intelligence rivals that of dogs. They are not just animals; they are members of our families. It is devastating and horrifying to even consider that these gentle, intelligent creatures could end up on someone's dining table. We must stop cultivating a taste for rabbit meat, for it poses a significant risk to the welfare and safety of pet rabbits. Domestic rabbits, already at risk from irresponsible ownership and abandonment could end up in the wrong hands, adopted for their meat rather than their companionship.

The worrisome prospect intensifies when we realise that an increase in rabbit adoptions, due to their potential status as a food source, can lead to a decrease in the number of rabbits in shelters for those who genuinely wants to adopt them as a member of the family. We need laws to protect our pet rabbits from becoming a part of our food chain, just like we do with dogs, cats and other pets we hold dear.
