Prohibit the Purchase of Hotel Rooms for Others

The Issue

As someone who has been personally grappling with homelessness and confined to hotel rooms since I was became an adult in 2018, I deeply understand the harsh realities associated with this system. More than a housing crisis, it is often a plight of mental well-being. It's a heartrending scenario when someone gets unwillingly placed into a nightly rental by themselves, away from any kind of human compassion.

Purchasing hotel rooms for people other than oneself might seem like a gesture of goodwill, but in reality, it might pose dangers to the individuals placed in these circumstances and those in the immediate vicinity.

This system does not solve the perennial homelessness issue, but rather manages it, trapping individuals in a cycle of uncertainty and often, disenfranchisement. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, on a single night in 2019, roughly 568,000 people were experiencing homelessness in the United States, a number that has certainly grown, considering the economic impacts of COVID-19.

The government's role is critical, but relying on ad hoc measures during crises is not a sustainable solution. We need permanent, thoughtful, and empathetic change.

The effect that prolonged exposure to these living conditions takes a toll on an individual's mental health. Here in the United States, there is a stigma surrounding the comfortability of such. When an individual is made to feel excluded in this manner for excessive periods of time, they can become complacent or dangerous. There are many other ways that people can be affected as well. Rumors are spread, stories are told, and many other uncomfortable topics arise in daily conversation.

We urge lawmakers to reconsider laws that enable others to purchase hotel rooms for homeless individuals. Let's create safer, sustainable, and more dignified solutions for those struggling with housing insecurity. Let's make a change for the better. Please sign this petition.
