Prohibit the Construction and use of data centers in Washington State
The Issue
It is important we legally prohibit the construction and use of data centers that are used for digital data processing with an aggregate power demand exceeding 25 megawatts in Washington State
Our beautiful state, our clean water, clean air and available energy are in danger because of how wasteful data centers are, and how fast they're being constructed and put anywhere with water and electricity to spare. Unfortunately data centers are extremely wasteful with our clean water and electricity. And they will gladly leave us with nothing. We need to protect our precious resources and futures from the greedy billionaires who see our home as a chance for profit and surveillance and not see it as the priceless treasure our state is. This is our home. It's our job to protect it.
We need roughly 350,000 signatures in Washington to be able to propose this law and then try to take this statute to the ballets and with enough voter ratification we can add this law to the Washington constitution. Securing that our whole state is safe from these huge buildings that hurt our ecosystem and our economy. Thank you for your support!
Living in Washington State has always been a blessing. We're surrounded by beautiful landscapes, rich wildlife, and the pristine environment that we call home. But now, our tranquil existence is under threat. The construction and expansion of data centers in our state are jeopardizing our clean water, air, and overall natural harmony. My heart aches at the thought of our precious resources being wasted while our ecosystems stand vulnerable. These data centers, seemingly sprouting everywhere, demand an enormous amount of water and electricity, significantly contributing to our state's environmental woes.
The expansion of data centers isn't just a mere inconvenience; it's a potential environmental disaster waiting to happen. The energy consumption of these facilities is staggering. It is reported that data centers in the U.S. alone consume about 2% of the total electricity. Each large-scale data center can require up to 100 megawatts - that's enough to power a small town! Unfortunately, this massive energy drain often relies heavily on non-renewable sources, exacerbating carbon emissions and climate change. Our beautiful Washington State, with its commitment to sustainability, can't afford to let this continue.
Furthermore, these data hubs require significant water usage to cool servers, which strains our water resources. In regions already experiencing water stress, this could mean the difference between having adequate water for our communities or suffering shortages.
The beauty of Washington State, its majestic mountains, crystal clear rivers, and boundless forests, should be preserved for generations to come, not sacrificed for the sake of a few new data centers. We need sensible and forward-thinking policies that account for the environmental costs of these developments and work proactively to protect our state.
We are calling on the state legislature and local government officials to take immediate action to enforce a ban on constructing or expanding data centers in our beloved state. Instead, we urge investment in innovative and sustainable technologies that balance technological advancement with responsible stewardship of our natural resources. Help us stand up for our environment, for ourselves, and for future generations.
Please sign this petition to stop the sacrifice of our homeland for corporate greed. Together, we can ensure that our home, Washington state, remains a bastion of natural beauty.
