The Issue

During the last several years, the residential construction industry in our state has gone up. More often than not, residential real estate developers will clear 100% of existing vegetation, including trees before starting construction on a new subdivision.

Trees play an essential role in our ecosystem. They improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to the well-being of communities by reducing urban heat. Moreover, they help define the cultural and aesthetic identity of North Carolina, where residents and visitors alike cherish the green spaces that punctuate our urban areas. Many local ordinances require trees throughout residential neighborhoods. to see Baron land that was once so full of life makes me think there has got to be a better way. this better way would protect some of what is already there, while allowing progress.

To protect the existing green spaces and maintain the state's natural allure, we need legislation that requires developers to preserve a portion of mature trees on their properties. A mandate to leave a specific percentage of mature trees per acre will ensure that development is balanced with environmental preservation, making North Carolina a model for sustainable growth. This word also further help save on costs like replanting landscaping in order to comply with local regulations.

Enacting such legislation would set a precedent for responsible development. It would encourage developers to integrate designs that are harmonious with the natural environment, valuing the presence of trees as crucial assets rather than obstacles. We must advocate for policies that reflect our responsibility to future generations, ensuring that they too can enjoy the same natural beauty that we have.

I urge you to support this initiative by signing the petition to demand protective legislation for North Carolina's trees. Together, we can take a stand to preserve our state's cherished landscapes and hold developers accountable for responsible practices. Together, we can keep North Carolina green and beautiful.
