Prohibit Semi Parking in our Community next to our loved ones final resting place
Prohibit Semi Parking in our Community next to our loved ones final resting place
The Issue
Picture visiting Sunrise Gardens cemetery to honor a loved one, but being interrupted by the noise and blockage from parked semi-trucks. Our business faces this problem every day, as the lot across from us is meant for peaceful remembrance but is often crowded by large trucks.
Cemeteries should offer a quiet space for reflection. Semi-trucks parking nearby disrupt this peaceful environment with noise, unsightly views, and blocked entrances, making it distressing and inconsiderate for visitors.
Moreover, the constant parking of semi-trucks poses safety hazards. These large vehicles often block sightlines, making it dangerous for pedestrians and other vehicles trying to navigate around the cemetery area. Additionally, they contribute to increased pollution, which further degrades the environment around these hallowed grounds.
Local laws must prioritize the sanctity and tranquility of cemeteries by instituting a ban on semi-truck parking within a significant distance from such areas. Authorities can collaborate with nearby businesses and transportation companies to find alternative parking lots that do not interfere with the sanctity of cemetery grounds. Residents can take immediate action by attending city council meetings to express their concerns, contacting local officials directly to advocate for change, and participating in community planning sessions. Additionally, residents can organize neighborhood groups to monitor parking practices and report violations to local authorities.
We need your support to protect our sacred spaces from being compromised by inappropriate parking practices. Sign this petition to urge local officials to enact changes in parking regulations, ensuring that cemeteries remain peaceful and respected sanctuaries for mourning families and guests.
On Jan. 6, 2026, there was an accident on the curve that is on the side of the cemetery. This accident involved 2 cars, a motorcycle, and a semi-truck. We are unsure of the condition of the people involved. This accident makes us think, what will happen with this parking area being permitted? How many more accidents will occur? How many people being hurt or lives lost will happen?
As many residents know, this area has had its share of accidents. (Press, 2025) The addition of this parking area will likely increase the number of accidents. (Vehicles Table 26. Parked and Working Large Truck Fatal Crash Statistics, 2018-2020, n.d.) Even with the addition of a turning lane for the semi-trucks to get into this parking area, what safety risks will there be when they exit this structure? The hill on the opposite side of the curve does have a limited sight distance for oncoming traffic to see the semi-trucks exiting the lot.
There is also the issue of when burial services arrive at the cemetery. When there is not a police officer escort, how will this parking area affect the flow of traffic? As previously discussed, there will not be 24/7 security officers. Without someone at the location at all times how will there be respect shown to the grieving families during their services?
Immediate Action and Safety Concerns
The accident on the curve near the cemetery, involving two cars, a motorcycle, and a semi-truck, highlights the critical risks posed by large vehicles in areas with limited sightlines.
Sightline Obstructions: Semi-trucks parked near curves or hills can block the view of oncoming traffic, significantly increasing the risk of collisions for vehicles exiting cemetery grounds.
Without dedicated security or police escorts, large vehicles can disrupt funeral processions and intrude on grieving families.
Environmental Impact: Idling trucks contribute to noise and air pollution, degrading the tranquil environment required for a cemetery.
Relevant Georgia Laws and Regulations
Local and state regulations provide a framework for challenging inappropriate parking:
Georgia Code § 40-6-203: Prohibits parking in any place where official signs are posted. Local municipalities have the authority to install "No Parking" signs for commercial vehicles in specific zones.
Residential & Commercial Zoning: Many Georgia cities, such as Atlanta, Tifton, and Macon-Bibb, have enacted ordinances banning semi-truck parking in residential or specified commercial zones to protect neighborhood sanctity and safety.
Cemetery Protections: Georgia law provides specific protections for the sanctity of burial grounds and requires permits for disturbances near these sites.
