Prohibit News Outlets from Publicizing Unconvicted Crime Cases without Consent

The Issue

I am one among numerous victims of sexual assault whose life has been significantly impacted by the premature disclosure of criminal cases in media. The experiences remain etched in our minds, not just as physical violations, but also the emotional trauma exacerbated when the news outlets disregard our human rights and publish stories about us without our consent.

Several cases around Georgia, including my own, have been negatively impacted due to such unrestricted publication, even mentioning explicit details, such as the inclusion of police reports. Recently, The Georgia Gazette issued a story that detailed a local rape case, providing every intricate detail of the horrific event. The victim's agony was splashed across public platforms, without any permission from her or a legal conviction of the alleged perpetrator.

Such practices are harmful and potentially as damaging as the crime itself. According to a study conducted by the World Health Organisation, publicizing the details of sexual assault cases without consent can lead to severe psychological harm for the victims. This irresponsible behavior is not very different from slander and undermines our right to dignity and privacy.

We demand a change in these harsh practices. All news outlets must be required to attain explicit permission from the concerned parties before publicizing any article involving ongoing criminal cases. Hence, the goal of journalism to inform should not surpass the boundaries of human decency and compassion.

We call upon the legislative powers in Georgia, USA, to hear our plea and take immediate action. Sign this petition to protect victims' rights and advocate for responsible journalism.
