Prohibit Horse Racing for Horses Over Ten Years Old in the UK
The Issue
As a passionate animal advocate, I have been devastated by instances of animal suffering and abuse in the horse racing industry. I was particularly heartbroken by the death of Celebre D'Allen, a 13-year-old horse who fell during the 2025 Grand National and died two days later. Despite having participated in barely any races in the preceding years, Celebre D'Allen was forced to compete in a gruelling 4.2-mile race with over 30 jumps. His jockey was subsequently banned for only ten days by the British Horseracing Authority, accused of riding Celebre to his death when it was apparent the horse had no more to give. This incident is just a mirthless glimpse of the dark side of the horse racing industry. According to Animal Aid, an estimated 200 horses die on UK racecourses each year, a significant portion of which are over the age of ten. Forcing these older horses to compete isn't just unethical, it is deadly. In honour of these beautiful, noble creatures, and to prevent horrific incidents like what happened with Celebre, we are calling for a ban on the racing of horses over ten years old in the UK. Let's ensure that these animals are given the opportunity to live their later years in peace, free from the threat of overexertion, injury, or death due to racing. Sign this petition to support a better, more humane treatment of our treasured horses.
