Prohibit Fishing at Kiwanis Lake Rookery

Prohibit Fishing at Kiwanis Lake Rookery
The Issue
My son and I have a special bond with the beautiful waterfowl that call Kiwanis Lake in York City their home. Watching the majestic great egrets and black crowned night herons roam freely brings us immense joy. However, the frequent reports of these precious birds getting injured due to discarded fishing lines are heartbreaking. Just two years ago, my friends and I had to rescue a female mallard caught in a fishing line tangle, highlighting a pervasive issue at this cherished rookery site.
Kiwanis Lake is a sanctuary for these endangered species, yet despite its status as a registered rookery, it remains perilously unsafe due to inadequate regulatory enforcement. The injuries caused by pollution and irresponsible fishing practices are increasing, threatening the survival of the great egrets and black crowned night herons. These birds deserve a safe haven, free from the constant threat of human disregard.
The current efforts to protect these birds are insufficient. Without stricter enforcement, the situation will only worsen. Therefore, I am advocating for a prohibition on all fishing activities at the rookery site. If this is not entirely feasible, then at the very least, regulated fishing events should be introduced, with cleanup crews mandated to ensure the area remains safe and free from hazardous waste.
Protecting the great egrets and black crowned night herons requires immediate action. These birds are not just part of our natural ecosystem, they are part of our community. Every bird saved is a testament to our commitment to preserving the diversity and beauty of York City's wildlife.
We urge the local authorities and concerned residents to prioritize this issue. A safer environment for our feathered friends translates to a richer community experience for all of us. Help us in our fight to preserve the integrity and safety of Kiwanis Lake.
Please sign this petition to demand the protection of these majestic birds and to hold those in charge accountable for enforcing stricter rules to safeguard their habitat. Together, we can make Kiwanis Lake a true sanctuary once more.
