Prohibit Excessive Fireworks in Keokuk, Except for Licensed Events

The Issue

As a resident of Keokuk, Iowa, I've personally witnessed the distress and disruption caused by explosive fireworks. Our pets, wildlife, and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suffer immense trauma each time the sky explodes with these loud, bright bursts. Additionally, the environmental fallout from fireworks contributes to local pollution, causing tangible harm to our natural spaces.

Studies have shown that fireworks create airborne particles that contribute to air pollution, negatively affecting our health and the environment (EPA, 2017). Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, around 11-20% of veterans who served in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD. These veterans can be severely traumatized by the loud explosions, triggering episodes of their combat experiences.

The well-being of our citizens, both human and animal, should be placed above the momentary pleasure of firework displays. It's high time we put stricter measures in place for the use of these explosives. Therefore, we seek to ban the use of all explosive fireworks within the limits of our city, strictly allowing them only at licensed events where necessary precautions can be taken. Other Iowa communities have these restrictions, like Iowa City, Coralville, Des Moines, Ames, and more, so this type of restriction is not uncommon.

Your support for this critical issue will demonstrate your commitment to the welfare of all members of our community - people, pets, veterans and the environment. Please sign this petition to make Keokuk a safer and cleaner city.
