Prohibit Convicted Felons from Running for Presidency

The Issue

Like many of you, I am a citizen who believes in the principles of justice, equality, and high ethical standards for our leaders. At present, an unsettling discrepancy deeply concerns me: convicted felons, individuals stripped of many basic citizenship rights, can still run to be the country's highest office bearer.

Remarkably, a convicted felon can't vote in most states, can't join our esteemed military, can't be employed by most fast food chains, or gain a security clearance. Yet, our system permits that same individual to take on the role of Commander-in-Chief, control our military forces, and hold the responsibility of the nation's nuclear codes. Quite simply, the existing law permitting this defies logic and raises numerous security issues.

It is essential to note that according to The Sentencing Project, an estimated 6.1 million people in the United States have lost their voting rights due to felony disenfranchisement as of 2016. Furthermore, The Marshall Project highlights that a clear majority of employers would not hire applicants with a criminal record, casting a shadow over a felon's employment prospects. But even with these limitations imposed, current laws allow such individuals to aspire to lead our country.

In light of the eminent role, the President plays within our nation, and considering the broad range of privileges, responsibilities, and powers this position holds, it is of utmost importance that we revise our laws so that a convicted felon does not have the opportunity to serve in this capacity.

Our country deserves strong, ethically sound leadership that encourages trust and embodies the true spirit of our nation, improving our lives, and guiding our way forward. Therefore, we demand a change in the law to exclude convicted felons from running for the presidency. Your signature can help to bridge this gap in the administration of justice. Please sign this petition for a safer, stronger America.
