Prohibit Bonfire Nights Across the United Kingdom
The Issue
As a concerned citizen and resident of the United Kingdom, I am deeply disturbed by the ongoing tradition of Bonfire nights; a tradition not only harmful, but dangerous for numerous people every year. These celebrations, originally conceived to mark the foiling of Guy Fawkes's treasonous plot, are perilously misused, especially by youngsters.
Every year, irresponsible use of fireworks, which is rampant during these festivities, leads to multiple injuries. According to NHS data, in 2014-15, there were 4,506 hospital admissions for injuries caused by fireworks - a rise of 111 from the previous year. This trend continues to escalate, indicative of the grave danger these nights pose.
Moreover, the cacophonous noise caused by the nights intensely distresses our pets. It also leads to sleep disturbance among the public, affecting their health and productivity. It’s not uncommon for the extreme noise to trigger PTSD episodes in those suffering from it. The cost of the extra emergency services deployed for the nights drains hundreds of thousands of pounds from the public purse - funds that could be better utilized elsewhere.
Bonfire night, in essence, celebrates an act of terrorism, instilling a skewed sense of joy in destructive activities and encouraging reckless behavior. While it is acknowledged that these festivities do raise charitable donations, there are safer and more constructive ways to conduct fundraisers.
It’s time we reevaluate our traditions, keeping in view the larger good and safety of the public. The collective money spent on fireworks could be directly donated to charity organizations, dealing a significant blow to the expenses relating to firework accidents, and at the same time contributing positively to society.
This is why we are urging the government to ban Bonfire Nights across the United Kingdom. For the safety of every living being and for more peaceful nights, sign this petition. We hope to spread the word and enlighten the concerned authorities about the dangerous implications of this celebration. Your signature can make a difference in the lives of thousands.
