Prohibit Banks from Selling Off Mortgages in Ireland

The Issue

I am deeply impacted by the escalating cost of living and ever-increasing rents in Ireland, a consequence of unfair banking practices such as selling off mortgages. Predatory vulture funds are exacerbating an already concerning housing crisis, and we can no longer stand idle.

In Ireland, an increasing number of banks are selling off loans to vulture funds, leading to a surge in rents and decreasing home ownership security. In 2018, Project Glas saw loans worth €5.2 billion sold to such entities (source: Irish Times). These so-called investors then crank up the rents or enforce the extraordinary sale of homes, leaving many of us in precarious financial situations.

This practice not only fuels inequality in our society but also contributes to the rising number of homeless individuals. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported that there were roughly 10,448 persons in emergency accommodation in Ireland during February 2020, a stark reminder of the pressing issue at hand.

It is high time we protect our citizens from these oppressive practices. We demand that the authorities enforce legislation to prevent banks from selling off mortgages, thereby securing a fair and stable housing market in Ireland. This is about protecting common people, our homes, and our future. Your signature can make a difference. Please, sign this petition.
