Prohibit Backyard Fireworks in Hamilton, ON, Canada

The Issue

My reasons for seeking to ban backyard fireworks in our Hamilton, ON, Canada neighbourhood, are personal yet broad. It's not just a single issue; it's about the safety, peace, and cleanliness of our environment. Fireworks, though beautiful, hold an unseen terror. They are a potential environmental and safety hazard. The burst of colour is brief, but the aftermath is lasting. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year. This risk in our own backyards is simply too high.

Moreover, these fireworks are a significant disturbance to our resident pets. As pointed out in a study by ASAB, unregulated explosions of fireworks can create a sense of confusion and terror in pets, and in severe cases, cause prolonged difficulties.

Yet, the noise pollution aspect cannot be overlooked. According to the Noise Pollution Clearinghouse, fireworks exceed the 120-decibel mark. That's past the safe hearing level as recognized by the World Health Organization! Far too often, this noise peaks well past the 11 pm mark with our overwhelmed bylaw officers trying their best to respond. The bylaw officers end their shifts at 11:30 and any further noise complaints then have to be reported to the police, which is a huge waste of resources.

Additionally, it's a disturbance for our diligent shift workers, a category I fall under myself. This noise disrupts our sleep cycles, impacting productivity and health.

Our plea is simple but imperative. Prohibit the use of backyard fireworks in Hamilton, ON, Canada. Together, let’s build a safer, quieter, and cleaner neighbourhood. Please support our mission by signing this petition.
