Stop 'Zoo Lates' - it is against animal welfare!

The Issue

Please sign this petition to help bring the 'infamous' Zoo Lates to a stop.

These are parties held in London Zoo and as you can see by this article (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jul/18/london-zoo-party-night-animal-welfare ) are clearly not taking the animals welfare into account.

This should stop before anymore animals come to harm.

Thank you.

A petition about Zoo Lates was presumably directed towards me because it was thought that I am still President of ZSL. In fact I retired in June, However, since Zoo Lates were established in my watch it is worth saying that animal welfare was always at the front of our minds when Council agreed to setting them up and in subsequent years checking that all was well. The Zoo Lates events are carefully monitored by our welfare officer, animal duty managers and researchers, so appropriate action can be taken by the relevant teams on the night. Reports are also assessed by veterinary and senior animal staff so broader changes can be implemented before the following week. If we felt the consumption of alcohol contributed to increased risk to our animals, we would not hesitate to stop selling it. Presently we search bags on entry to ensure visitors are not bringing their own alcohol on site, and turn away anyone clearly inebriated before entry or during the event. The Zoo Lates events introduce a new audience to animals and conservation, and research has demonstrated a high proportion of visitors leaving Zoo Lates are more interested in conservation than when they arrived. My impression when attending was certainly that the vast majority of the people coming for the evening were deeply interested in the talks given by the staff. It would be quite wrong to describe these events simply as parties. The drunken idiots who caused the recent trouble are a tiny majority of those coming and every effort will be made to ensure that anybody attempting to do the same sort of thing in the future will be rapidly pounced upon. The additional money these events make allows us to increase our contribution to the conservation of animals in the wild. This year we ploughed an additional £500,000 into conservation through our Mission Opportunity Fund, which allowed ZSL staff to apply for funds to launch or expand conservation projects.
