Release Recorded H-353 Lectures to Canvas

Release Recorded H-353 Lectures to Canvas
Why this petition matters
Each class session since the start of the semester, Professor Renner has diligently recorded the live zoom meetings. Understandably, Professor Renner has expressed concerns regarding student privacy rights when asked about releasing the recordings to Canvas. Many H-353 students have asked for these lecture recordings to be released to the (private) course Canvas page, as they do not believe this would be a privacy issue. More importantly, Professor Renner's H-353 students believe that these recordings would aid them in reviewing the cumulative material prior to the last few exams, as many feel overwhelmed by concepts from earlier in the semester appearing again with more complex applications. Having these recordings available to use as a study aid would help each student tremendously and would save live class time by cutting out questions explained in depth in prior recorded lectures. Online learning has brought unique challenges to the academic environment and these challenges impact both faculty members, administration, and students alike. It is our responsibility to work together within the IU community to bridge the gaps imposed by the pandemic as best as possible until a time when we can resume in-person lectures.
Pursuant to Indiana University's Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, & Conduct (Section I.A.), IU students "shall have the right to have access to faculty, academic technology, classrooms, libraries, presentations, and other resources necessary for the learning process." It would be reprehensible to imagine that these rights would not be extended to the online classroom setting as well. In accordance with this right, students should be able to access learning material which is essential to develop a comprehensive understanding of course concepts. This will allow for better class engagement during live lectures, as Professor Renner will not have to spend so much time reiterating material which was already taught in detail. We are not asking that the course format transition to an asynchronous course, as we (students) also appreciate the benefits of live lectures. However, that is also not to say that those lectures that have already been recorded should not be made available to the students as these recordings are necessary resources for the learning process.
Sign this petition if you are in favor of releasing all of the recorded lectures from the start of the fall semester through November 2nd, 2020; AND take no issue with these unedited recordings (including student engagement) being released to the private course page via Kaltura.
