In May of 2025, my son fell victim to a brutal attack that left him with brain damage and several other life-altering injuries. Today, he cannot leave the house due to a loss of balance, sensitivity to light and noise, and is unable to enjoy the simple pleasure of sitting outside in good weather because the light is too painful. The man responsible for these horrific injuries admitted to causing grievous bodily harm, which inflicted life-threatening injuries on my son, along with seven other major and numerous minor injuries. Yet, my family and I watched in disbelief as he exited Crown Court laughing at us, having received nothing more than a 10-month suspended sentence. While his assailant walked free, my son lives a life sentence of chronic pain every day.

This ordeal has highlighted a grave injustice in our legal system. Victims and their families are all too often sidelined, with their suffering overshadowed by the leniency shown to perpetrators. It is a travesty that victims like my son should bear a lifelong burden of injury and trauma, while those responsible receive mere slaps on the wrist. Our judicial system must change to prioritize the needs and justice for victims.

We demand stricter sentencing for violent offenders, especially in cases where the victim suffers life-altering consequences. Courts should take into full account the long-term impact on victims and their families when determining sentences. Zero-tolerance towards violent crime must be a foundational principle in our society, safeguarding victims and acting as a deterrent for future offenses.
