Prioritize Veterans in Federal Employment During Reduction in Force

Prioritize Veterans in Federal Employment During Reduction in Force
The Issue
I stand before you, a Purple Heart medal veteran with over 20 years of distinguished service to our nation. My commitment to serving my country did not cease upon donning civilian attire. Instead, it shaped my dedication as a federal employee. Recently, I made a decision to switch agencies to further enhance our national welfare. However, this transition should not mean I am perceived as a new employee or should be subject to a reduction in force.
There is widespread belief that veterans in federal employment bring a wealth of experience, resilience, leadership, and unique skills. A report published by the Center for a New American Security affirms that veterans are disciplined, cohesive team players with strong problem-solving capabilities and ethical standards (Center for a New American Security, 2012). Thus, it is critical to retain such talents particularly in times of economic downturns or policy-induced employment reductions.
Therefore, I propose a policy change that requires all veterans who are current federal employees to be the last group subjected to a reduction in force. This initiative will not only honor the sacrifices made by veterans in service to the nation but will also safeguard the investing federal agencies have made in their unique skills and experiences.
Your signature is more than just a digital scribble; it’s a beacon of support for fellow veterans. A reinforcement of our commitment to our heroes. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to prioritize veterans in government employment strategies and procedures during reductions in force.
