Prioritize Student Safety: Demand an Overpass Only at Lone Elm and K10

The Issue

We, the citizens of Lenexa and Olathe, call on our city officials and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to support our request for an overpass-only at Lone Elm and K10. The proposed K10/Lone Elm Interchange project jeopardizes the safety of 3,600+ Lenexa and Olathe students driving, biking, and walking to Olathe Northwest High School, Prairie Trails Middle School, Manchester Park Elementary School, and Meadow Lane Elementary School. The connection of Lone Elm as an overpass-only would serve as a safe route for students while providing a desired connection for local traffic between our two cities. The addition of an interchange will increase traffic and speeds, creating a dangerous environment for student commuters. The proposed interchange appears to prioritize commercial interests over the safety of Lenexa and Olathe students. Increased traffic, particularly truck traffic, to and from Aldi’s Distribution Center and future commercial buildings, poses unacceptable risks to students. We urge Lenexa to engage with KDOT and Olathe to explore alternative designs that preserve the safety of Lone Elm. Our children should not be asked to sacrifice their safety for infrastructure aimed at increasing commercial traffic flow and sales tax. We trust that Lenexa City Council, Olathe City Council, and KDOT will act to protect our students and uphold their responsibility to the communities they have been elected to serve.

Thanks so much for including me as a decision maker. I appreciate all of the listed concerns. The safety of our students should always be our first priority. KDOT is hosting an open house April 10th from 5:00-7:00 pm at K-State Olathe. Please attend. The open house is focused specifically on the K-10/Lone Elm interchange. My current understanding is a full interchange is being planned. The Southern on/off ramps will tie into a turning circle. All Southbound truck traffic will be routed to a new Westbound lane that will run parallel to K-10. This is designed to keep the trucks off of Southbound Lone Elm. I’ll be at the open house with a name tag. Hope to see you there.
