Prioritize Seniors in the City of Newburgh (DMV)

Prioritize Seniors in the City of Newburgh (DMV)
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of the City of Newburgh and Orange County, respectfully urge County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus to implement a dedicated service line at the Broadway DMV for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
Currently, all customers seeking DMV services in Newburgh are forced to wait outside in extreme weather, whether it’s rain, snow, or excessive heat—often for long periods before being allowed entry. This experience can be physically and mentally taxing, especially for our seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities with mobility issues, chronic illness, or limited stamina.
Our most vulnerable neighbors should not be forced to suffer discomfort or risk their health to access basic services.
For example, a senior was waiting to be served and her number was called. Moving slow with a walker the advocate tried to usher her to the window which was on the other side of the room. The advocate then went ahead and told the clerk she was coming but was slow. The clerk replied "I already called the next number she's going to have to wait until it's called again." The advocate insisted she be served and not have to wait again. If the advocate didn't pushback on her behalf she would have been skipped over just because she was too slow to the window. This is just one of many instances where seniors or people with disabilities are discarded, dismissed, and disrespected.
We are calling for the Steven M. Neuhaus, County Executive to:
- Reinstate a priority service line or window specifically for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities.
- Provide indoor or weather-protected waiting areas for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
- Train staff to ensure compassionate and equitable treatment for all residents.
This is not just a matter of convenience—it’s a matter of dignity, equity, and basic respect. Our elders and disabled neighbors in the City of Newburgh have contributed to our communities and deserve service that reflect that.
Newburgh deserves better. Prioritize accessibility now.
Sincerely,
Those Who Care
