Prioritize Our Students’ Safety and Education – Stop the Rebuild of the Lotus Apartment

The Issue

To: Ogden City Council, Planning Commission, and Local Officials

We, the concerned parents, residents, and community members of Ogden, Utah, respectfully urge the city to halt rebuilding plans for the Lotus apartment project near our children’s school. This project has raised significant concerns about student safety, disrupted education, and the prioritization of high-density housing over the well-being of our children.

Our Concerns:

 1. Oversight of Community Input:

The original project was approved without giving parents or the community an adequate chance to voice their concerns. Council meetings were conducted without proper notice to those most impacted, leaving parents out of critical conversations.

 2. Safety Risks:

The recent fire at the Lotus apartments could have been devastating had it occurred during school hours. This underscores the risks of placing high-density housing so close to a school, where the safety of hundreds of students should be the utmost priority.

 3. Disruption to Education:

Ongoing construction and the looming possibility of another incident like the fire have disrupted our children’s learning environment. This location should be a haven for education—not a construction zone or a site of recurring safety hazards.

 4. Ogden’s 25-Year Plan:

Ogden City’s recently unveiled 25-year plan appears to prioritize high-density housing over maintaining and supporting our schools as permanent spaces for learning. This raises concerns about whether the long-term needs of our students, families, and community are being overlooked.

Our Request:

We urge Ogden City to:

 • Halt rebuilding plans for the Lotus apartment project near our school.

 • Reevaluate the suitability of this site for high-density housing, considering its proximity to the school and the safety risks involved.

 • Explore alternative locations for this project where it can better align with community needs and priorities.

 • Commit to preserving and enhancing the area around our school as a permanent, safe, and thriving space for education.

Our children’s education and safety should not be compromised for the sake of development. We believe Lotus has the resources to relocate their project to a more suitable area. As parents and community members, we ask that the city take immediate action to ensure the well-being of our students and preserve the integrity of our school.

Sign this petition to stand with us in prioritizing our children’s future. Let’s work together to ensure Ogden’s development aligns with the needs of its most vulnerable residents—our students.

Call to Action:

 • Share this petition with friends, neighbors, and other community members.

 • Attend upcoming city council meetings to voice your concerns.

 • Contact your local representatives and urge them to prioritize student safety and education over high-density housing.
