Nursing Standard have published an article today about the sad death of a student nurse who took her own life after being suspended from her nursing course due to her health issues
She was a keen advocate for mental health and had talked about her own health issues
An an RCN ambassador she spoke at congress outlining the issue:
‘Unfortunately two years ago I sadly lost my best friend to suicide. Suicide is a feared problem which we are scared to talk about, whether it is the fear to say the wrong thing or the fear that a conversation may push someone over the edge.
'Well let me tell you this, congress, suicide is preventable. I am only 20 years old and I’m proud to announce that I am suicide prevention trained and a survivor myself.
‘So today I urge you to support this resolution to help create change in our workforce to make suicide prevention training courses mandatory as, congress, you never know when this training could help you with the knowledge to save a life. Together we can make a difference.’
Why are the unions not pushing this issue?
Why are employers and universities not being made to do better?
Why isn't our regulator leading by example and showing the importance of this issue?
