Prioritize Mental Health During NMC investigations

The Issue

20 nurses have died by suicide since 2019, as reported in the NMC's own annual fitness to practice reports. These nurses have died by suicide prior to the conclusion of their case.  In 2023 - 2024 there were 5 suicides and during the last 3 years there have been 8 in total.  To date there has been no coroner's report outlining the NMC process as contributing to these deaths, however The Independant Newspaper reported on the 25th March 2026 that one case is now being examined.  This tragic statistic is because of the profound and deeply personal effect the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) handling of Fitness to Practice cases can have on registrants.

We are calling on the NMC to put mental health support mechanisms at the forefront of their operations.

The mental health crisis amongst NMC registrants is real, documented, and heartbreaking.Multiple articles across nursing press over the last few years have highlighted that nurses, particularly those under investigation, have higher chances of depression and anxiety which often lead to suicidal ideation (source: Journal of Advanced Nursing). Considering this evidence, it is imperative that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) takes immediate, effective action to prioritize the mental health of their registrants, especially those under investigation.

Making mental health support accessible and prioritized within the NMC's system should not be an afterthought - it should be a fundamental, top priority. By not prioritizing this issue, NMC betrays its duty of care towards its registrants - the hardworking, compassionate individuals that form its very foundation.

By signing this petition, you are calling on the NMC to put mental health support mechanisms at the forefront of their operations. Remember our nurses who give their all every day, and take a moment to support them by adding your name to this petition.
