Environmental justice means all communities have access to clean energy, safe drinking water, and protection from toxic pollution exposure. These three elements are vital for all Americans to live and thrive. Environmental racism is alive and growing in the United States, and it is a threat to the health and safety of Black communities across the nation. While renewed attention from the Biden administration and the Virginia Advisory Council on Environmental Justice (ACEJ) provide hope for communities of color who have far too often faced threats to their health and safety, we cannot let environmental racism grow in Virginia.

Now, Virginia is at an important inflection point in its political trajectory as we navigate our new Governor's transition into office. We hope that Governor Glenn Youngkin will stand firmly against bad environmental policies that hurt underserved communities.

In Cumberland County, VA, the threat is very real, and very urgent. The Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility seeks to continue this irresponsible cycle of putting developers desires and financial gains over people’s health by placing a mega-landfill in the area. Not only does this mega-landfill threaten the water and air quality for the local community, but it also places at risk a historical Black landmark that the community treasures – the Pine Grove School. The Pine Grove Elementary School is a testament to the many challenges our Black communities have conquered over the generations, and it was one of thousands of “Rosenwald Schools” constructed in the South to educate Black children in the Jim Crow Era. Just this summer, the Pine Grove School was identified as one of America’s 11 most endangered historic places.

The passage of the Virginia Environmental Justice Act in 2020 asserts that environmental justice in Virginia means: “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of every person, regardless of race, color, national origin, income, faith, or disability, regarding the development, implementation, or enforcement of any environmental law, regulation, or policy.” But the persistence and approval of projects like the Green Ridge Mega-Landfill says our elected officials believe otherwise.

As an organization dedicated to providing a voice for Black Americans and people from underserved communities, we strongly oppose this mega-landfill and all it stands for. We cannot stand by and accept promises of environmental justice – we need action! We must stop the Green Ridge Mega-Landfill once and for all!
