What began this February as a few determined neighbors trying to be heard has grown into something powerful. By May, those conversations became a petition. Now, just months later, nearly 3,000 residents are standing together for North Sunnyvale. A community that was once overlooked is now impossible to ignore.

We were promised a true village center at Fair Oaks Plaza and Lakewood Plaza. Instead, developer-driven housing-only plans advanced because the city never set clear, objective community standards.

When neighbors raised concerns about food access, essential services, and the inequity this creates, the response was that “hands are tied.” State leaders brushed off our calls, and when they finally replied, they focused more on technical definitions of a “food desert” than the lived reality of seniors, workers, and low income families in our community.

The consequences are real:

 • Residents are losing access to basic services.

 • Seniors and those without reliable transportation will have to travel farther for groceries.

 • Local minority-owned businesses are being displaced.

We are told to accept “what’s feasible.” But a neighborhood without essentials is not feasible. It is neglect.

This petition changed the conversation. It transformed frustration into collective action. It brought our concerns into council chambers, state offices, and local media.

Silence is easy to ignore. Thousands of united voices are not.

This is democracy at work. Neighbors standing together to ensure that our needs count. If the voices of the people aren’t heard, what purpose does democracy serve?

We are making progress because people have shown up, spoken out, and refused to let this issue fade. Step by step, we are correcting years of being historically underserved. North Sunnyvale is resilient, diverse, and deserves a village center that reflects and supports our community.

Decisions are being made now. Our voice must be at the table. Staying engaged is how we protect our future.

We have come too far to go quiet.

Minority-owned businesses deserve to remain part of this neighborhood. Residents deserve access to the essentials of daily life. Help us keep this momentum going:
