prioritize children's mental health over their education.

prioritize children's mental health over their education.
The Issue
I wish to address some concerns regarding the inadequate mental health support available for young individuals. It is my belief that this issue resonates with many individuals. I have outlined my concerns below and am in the process of initiating a petition (pending publication) seeking support from our MP where feasible.
For those unfamiliar with the current situation, it is worth noting that in order for a child to undergo assessment for conditions such as ADHD or autism, they are required to exhibit consistent behaviors both at home and at school. Regrettably, services like CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) frequently decline assessment requests in cases where schools do not provide sufficient support. This often occurs when children conceal their behaviors, leaving both our children struggling and us as parents grappling to address their challenges. I perceive this as a form of neglect and abuse that warrants urgent attention.
Child abuse is a grave concern when a child conceals behaviors at school, and mental health professionals deem this behavior acceptable due to their adeptness at masking their true feelings to engage with the curriculum. Education encompasses more than textbooks; neglecting a child's emotional well-being, self-esteem, and confidence by assuming their well-being without proper evaluation amounts to neglect. The act of masking behaviors in an educational setting is profoundly concerning and warrants immediate attention from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Discrepancies between a child's behavior at home and in school should not be dismissed. Warning signs such as incomplete homework, lack of reading at home, or tardiness to school are indicators that demand a thorough assessment. It is imperative to shift the focus from mere classroom presence to addressing the holistic well-being of each child. A fundamental change in the assessment process is imperative. Listening to and collaborating with parents is crucial in safeguarding the emotional and mental welfare of children.
As a parent to four children, two boys and two girls, my sons underwent assessments promptly and were diagnosed with ADHD due to their challenges in focusing during classroom lessons, disruptive behavior, emotional regulation difficulties, and struggles with social interaction. It appears that the current support system primarily focuses on facilitating academic performance within the educational setting, ensuring compliance with the curriculum, and classroom behavior standards. However, the vital aspect of how children manage at home seems to be overlooked. I strongly advocate for necessary changes to address these overlooked concerns.
