Prioritize App Store User Security on Google Play

Prioritize App Store User Security on Google Play

The Issue

It all started when I, as a regular app user, downloaded a new application from Google Play. It was a mainstream app, I had no reason to suspect anything wrong. Yet, the security breach that followed was catastrophic.

Google Play, as one of the largest online platforms for digital distribution, hosts more than 2.87 million apps, as per Statista 2020 report. It offers excellent utility and vast access to numerous applications. However, the issue of user security tends to lurk underneath.

Research from Symantec, a Software Security Group, highlights an alarming fact. One in five Google Play apps that were visible in 2014 disclosed private information without the users' consent. Consequently, many individuals and businesses have suffered from the breach of security, just as I did with the rogue app I unwittingly downloaded.

What makes this situation more distressing is the lack of strict security measures to protect users. With the Google Play Store so inexorably tied into our daily lives, addressing this issue is not optional, it is necessary.

Proactive actions must be taken to better secure the Google Play Store, to protect users' data and prevent unauthorized access. We are calling on Google to prioritize user security by implementing stricter app review processes, enforcing stronger sanctions against apps that breach the terms and conditions, and increasing user control over their private data.

Join us in demanding that Google Play places user security at the top of their priority list. Stand against the globalization of personal data breach. If we all come together, we can make a real difference. Sign this petition now.
