For many, using the bathroom has become a stressful and threatening event. Many trans students feel that there is no place for them to fulfill a basic human function and live in fear of going to the bathroom and being harassed. According to an article by Cambridge University Press by LUC BOVENS and
ALEXANDRU MARCOCI, "According to the largest survey of the experiences of trans people in the USA to date (James et al., 2016), 59% of respondents sometimes refrained from using a bathroom outside of their home in the previous year." 

In regards to the argument that students will take advantage of the bathrooms fo illegal or unsavory activities- This kind of behavior has and will continue to happen in all the bathrooms, and it is unfair to deny bathrooms to certain students and not others for behavior that will likely happen in all bathrooms. If there is concern about the bathrooms being able to be locked, there are administrator keys that can be used to open bathrooms. 

Having a place to go to the bathroom is a basic human right that many students at Blake High School have been denied. Help us to put a gender neutral bathroom on every floor of the school and in the D and E buildings!

Blake can be a standard for how bathrooms should be approached throughout our community. Take advantage of trends- set the standard and be loud about it, encourage others to do the same.
