Justice for Ernest McBride High school BSU Alumni

Justice for Ernest McBride High school BSU Alumni
The Issue
As soon as the president and founder of The Black Student Union of Ernest McBride High school Graduated, Catherine Salazar and Trevor Bacchus stepped in to serve as advisor to students within BSU, which is a position meant for the safety of the students in a club but not a direct decision maker for a club. Catherine Salazar along with the help of Trevor Bacchus committed a number of things that went against the schools club bylaws and BSU club bylaws drawn by the members themselves.
- Ms.Salazar did not let any of the BSU members appoint any of their officers into office, all of them were appointed. All members of a club were supposed to be voted in with no prior criteria but Ms. Salazar and Mr. Bacchus set extreme criteria such as a grade point average above a 3.0 and disciplinary check which was not stated in the club bylaws and held other students from being able to run as club leaders. The final decision of who would be club leaders and take office position such as president would be appointed not by the club members and the majority of votes but by Ms. Salazar and Mr. Bacchus and who they deemed fit for each position, which is autocratic and undermined our democracy and voices.
- The union as a whole RAISED money to buy the BSU graduation stoles, which were PROMISED to students who were apart of the club. There was no other criteria for being able to receive a BSU stole but Ms. Salazar BARRED Three students Malya Parker, Caleb Zaldaña and Tiana Tullous from wearing BSU stoles. The reason? Missing TWO meetings throughout the ENTIRE school year, something never stated as a law in the club bylaws. When brought to the advisor of the student council Candice Browning she ignored us and told students to direct there concerns to principle and vice principle.
- In the Black Student Union club, it was against club rules to appoint more than one club advisor; Salazar had assigned multiple at any given time she deemed fit. When the three students looked for ways to have a conversation with The current BSU president, Ms. Salazar and Mr. Bacchus they gave a meeting time but changed the location of the meeting place each time the 3 students asked to meet with the club advisors.
- All of these matters were brought up by all three directly to then-Principal Steven Rockenbach, in which he promised he would “look into it,” but never did. His vice principal which the three students also reached out to and held a meeting with promised that she would "look into it" but retired.
Their voices were never heard. They demanded justice and went through every channel they could to seek justice but that justice was never served. We demand a 1. A public apology to Malya, Caleb and Tiana
2. Immediate Removal from the BSU and promised restored democracy
3. A recorded meeting between Salazar, Bachuss and the three students that were wronged Malya, Caleb and Tiana
More common than not, black voices are not heard and are consistently drowned out. We are not longer complacent with the In-justices put against us and any other future black student, we demand to be heard and we deserve justice. It is shocking and appalling that an institution named after a black activist, black students would be silenced and ignored.
