Jeremy Hube started this petition to Prince William County Public Schools

Current Gar-Field Students, Alumni, Prince William County Community Members, and others please join together in encouraging Gar-Field High School Principal Matthew Mathison, and the Prince William County school board to end the use of a harmful mascot and iconography at Gar-Field High School.

Calling itself "The School Of Champions" falls short and hollow when the school does not stand forth to Champion all in its halls, or its community.

It is often asserted that the use of Native and Indigenous cultures as mascots holds them up to exemplify their bravery and pride.  However, there is a wealth of research accrued that more than suggests that this is false.

According to the research and recommendation of the American Psychological Association published in 2005, using Indian mascots harms not only native students, but it also negatively impacts all students.

More recent studies expand upon and strengthen these findings and ideas.

Fairfax High School ended the use of a mascot derived from confederate imagery in 1986 with unilateral action by the principal at the time. This action was upheld by the court. Blacksburg High School in southwestern Virginia ended the use of a Native American mascot in 2002.  It is well past time for our school to follow this example and to be an additional example to the numerous other educational establishments in this country who have not followed the growing research that these images are damaging to individuals and the communities they are purported to cohere.

The deepening discussion on race and culture that we are currently experiencing is more broadly exposing the ways in which we as a country have failed portions of our populations and need to do better.  But action is needed as well to make those improvements.

If you are a current Gar-Field student, a Gar-Field alumni, live in Prince William County, or share these views–please join the effort by signing this petition.
