Delphine and Sylvie P started this petition to Prince George's County council and

Chickens aren’t allowed in most backyards in our county. We want to be able to have chickens because they are cute and they are fun to watch. As long as there aren’t too many chickens it is easy to take care of them. They aren’t as loud as dogs, unless you have a rooster, and we aren’t saying people should be allowed to have roosters.

We heard you can have five chickens in many other neighborhoods in the DC area, and we think that is a good number. The pandemic is very stressful and seeing chickens has made it less stressful. You can get fresh eggs from chickens and give them your food scraps like apple peels and leftover rice and also chicken food.

Why do people not want us to have chickens? We heard that towns don’t want to have to manage chicken care, but they don’t tell people they can’t have cats and dogs.

We like being able to take care of chickens, to hold them and feed them. We even put chickens on a swing and hammock. They are so cute and pretty.

We have learned that not all chickens are yellow. Chickens can't get rabies. Chickens are omnivores, they eat plants and animals like bugs and grubs. We helped take care of chickens in Takoma Park and it is fun to collect eggs.

We would like to be able to have chickens in our yard. We want the rules to be changed.
