N A started this petition to Prime Minister of India and

Kerala has been battling with heavy rains for the past few months and experienced its worst flooding since 1924, affecting 10 out of 14 districts resulting in loss of 37 lives and displacing more than 60,000 people at the time of writing this petition. Local people are struggling with flash floods, landslides and property destruction on a massive scale

People had been evacuated thanks to the preparedness and prompt action of the State and Central Govt., but thousands are stranded at relief camps, staring at blank futures, terrified on how to continue on with their lives. Torrential rains forced the State Govt. to open up all shutters of Idukki dam, something that has never happened before, and open up 24 dams across the state, resulting in a trail of destruction.

Many people have shared their lives with the media like Ammu, who hails from Edaykkod, a place severely crippled with flooding and strong currents. Her story of losing her tiny hut, which she got under the Govt.'s '1 lac housing scheme' is heart-wrenching. Another person shared his story saying even his children's books and school certificates have been lost in the flooding. Countless people have lost all their belongings, homes, clothes, basic necessities, certificates and livelihood. They continue to live hand to mouth on the support given by strangers or at local relief camps.

The State and Central Govt. have set up more than 439 camps across the state for the displaced, and the losses incurred due to the flooding is estimated to be above 8,300 crore INR (11 billion USD), out of which the Central Govt. has released a fund of 200 crore INR (28 million USD).

We need to sign this petition to request the Central Govt. to release more funds, to help the affected people get their lives back on track, at least until they can sustain themselves and recover from this tragedy.

Thank you,
