Mining in The Cockpit Country is an environmental disaster in the making. Research indicates that more than 33% of arable land worldwide has been lost over the past four decades due to climate change. With climate change wreaking havoc on our plant, we must protect our remaining natural forested areas.

As reported by climatelinks.org. through severe hurricanes, increased rainfall intensity, and longer periods of drought, Jamaica has suffered large economic losses. Worldwide, 75% of people living in poverty rely on agriculture and natural resources for survival (mercycorps.org Quick Facts: How Climate Change Affects People Living In Poverty). Jamaicans rely heavily on agriculture. The poverty rate has increased in Jamaica.

As reported by cia.gov The World Fact Book, Jamaica's environmental problems are:

Heavy Rates of Deforestation

Coastal Waters Polluted By Industrial Waste, Sewage, And Oil Spills

Damage To Coastal Reefs

Land Erosion

We already have a wide range of environmental problems to address. The Cockpit Country must be protected from becoming another environmental disaster.

The Jamaican Government's answer to climate change impacts was the creation of The National Climate Change Framework,  with Land Management as one of Six Sector Action Plans.

The Jamaican Government under Prime Minister Andrew Holness must think strategically and long term and not allow profit motives to cause further environmental risk to our island. Land management not only includes what is above ground but also the waters below.  Unlike humans and some animals that can be corralled and restricted in their movement, ground waters know no boundaries and will flow as nature intends. So too does toxins.

Setting up a Buffer Zone in the Cockpit Country is useless and pointless as it does nothing to protect residents, animals, and plant life from the toxic waste created by mining companies.  The red mud (bauxite tailings) lakes that sit prominently, emitting dust and fumes, and sickening residents are a result of  the toxic waste created, and just as water seeps and nourishes, it too seeps but poisons.

We call on Prime Minister Holness and the Jamaican Government to STOP MINING IN THE COCKPIT COUNTRY!  PROTECT THE COCKPIT COUNTRY! PROTECT  THE ENVIRONMENT! PROTECT JAMAICA!
