Preventing Sexual Violence in the DRC

Preventing Sexual Violence in the DRC
The Issue
Doesn’t everyone have the right to live in secure environments without spiraling over their safety issues? It’s a fundamental right for safety and the current ongoing problems in the DCR classify it as a human rights social issue. Reports from past years indicate a high quantity of Congolese women who are forced into a cycle of rape and abuse promoted by warring sides to establish control of a situation. Even organizations such as the UN have documented this issue, showing just how urgent action is to be taken.
- 2022: 701 confirmed cases for sexual violence
- 2023: 733 cases in total
- Médecins Sans Frontières treated about two victims/hour in 2023 = 25,000 survivors got treatment
The current policies put in place by legislation don’t do enough to prevent this crisis. We need international support towards the DCR and for the Congolese government to be fully transparent in their actions to take accountability. They need to show advocacy to the survivors and give them the means of legal protection.
This petition is asking for your support to influence real change to have a resolution to this issue. We call on you to stand with the survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The goal is to:
- Spread awareness
- Ask for legislation changes to support survivors
- Promote reducing this issue as much as possible.
As citizens of the world, it’s crucial we uphold and raise our voices for those who cannot. Congolese women have been underrepresented and being put through acts of sexual violence against their wishes. In fact, these aren’t isolated incidents but a widespread crime that’s been increasing in areas of Congo from ongoing wars.
Foundations such as the Panzi Foundation are working to provide:
- Medical care
- Mental support
- Spread awareness for reducing cases of sexual violence in Congo.
They will be linked with this petition in case you want to donate.
Please sign this petition to help us make a difference and ask for justice. Thank you for your time to read though and your support.
