Prevent unlawful non renewal of leases for Low-Income Tenants

The Issue

My name is Amy, a long-term resident of Fort Dodge, IA. I have resided in the same apartment building for six years, living uneventfully under various management until recently, when a new property manager disrespectfully disrupted my peace and stability.

Six months ago, a new property manager took over our building, disregarding the needs of tenants and neglecting required documentation procedures necessary to maintain my housing. All my recent requests for the necessary documentation to adhere to requirements of Section 8 housing  have not only been ignored but belittled. In lieu of the respectful and professional communication one might expect from their housing provider, I was unceremoniously hit with an email detailing my lease's impending non-renewal. They failed to provide any legal reasons or justifications.

This is not only unethical, it's discriminatory and goes against the principles of housing rights. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,  non-renewal of leases without permissible reasons is a violation of a tenant's rights.

I need your help to change this by advocating for stronger and clearer protections for low-income tenants, ensuring that we - the vulnerable and often overlooked layer of society - are treated with dignity and respect. These new protections must prevent discriminatory non-renewal, enforce the prompt documentation process necessary for housing assistance, and ensure that management cannot unjustly oust tenants without a valid, legal reason.

Please sign the petition and join us in our quest to protect long-term, low-income tenants from discriminatory and retaliatory non-renewal of leases. A home should promise peace, security, and dignity. Let's help make sure it does.
