Prevent Tree Removal in South Stoneham Cemetery

Prevent Tree Removal in South Stoneham Cemetery
The Issue
South Stoneham Cemetery is a cherished oasis in Southampton—treasured by many who visit to pay respects to their loved ones or to simply find a peaceful moment amid nature. For countless individuals, the cemetery is a sacred space for reflection and solace, with its majestic trees playing a vital role in shaping this tranquil environment.
Tragically, this serenity is now under threat. Southampton Airport is seeking permission from Southampton City Council to fell numerous trees within South Stoneham Cemetery as part of its expansion project. Even if SCC refuse, the airport have stated they will ask the home secretary to intervene. Many other trees have been marked for such severe reductions that they are unlikely to survive, let alone recover. This plan not only endangers the cemetery’s natural beauty but also disregards the deep emotional and cultural ties the community has built with this space over generations.
The trees are more than just part of the landscape—they are living memorials, silent witnesses to the lives commemorated here. Their loss would not only diminish the visual and ecological richness of the area, but also undermine the very character that makes the cemetery a haven of peace and remembrance.
There are also serious environmental concerns. The cemetery is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including nesting kestrels, swifts, swallows, owls, and both green and great spotted woodpeckers. It also shelters bats, which would lose vital roosting sites and food sources, as well as suffer from increased light pollution due to the loss of tree cover. Deer, foxes, and rabbits also call this area home. Removing these trees in the name of airport expansion is neither environmentally sustainable nor in line with the values of preserving local green spaces for future generations.
While some mitigation efforts have been proposed, any new plantings would take decades to mature—if the habitat ever fully recovers at all. The unique biodiversity currently thriving here may never return.
It is crucial to strike a balance between economic development, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. We urge Southampton Airport to reconsider its plans and explore alternative solutions that do not encroach upon this deeply valued and ecologically significant site.
Join us in standing up for South Stoneham Cemetery. Sign this petition to demand protection for its irreplaceable trees and help preserve the tranquility, biodiversity, and heritage of this special place. Together, we can make a difference.
