The Issue

As passionate Californians deeply connected to our natural environment, we are troubled by the plan to use seals as entertainment at this year's California Poppy Festival in Lancaster. Our marine life, which holds such an essential place in our hearts, is fragile and precious. Against the backdrop of this past year’s devastating fires and aftermath pollution plaguing our coastlines, seals are one of the species that needs our protection, respect, and care more than ever.

Every year, the California Poppy Festival is held in the local desert fairgrounds, a location that is a hot, dry outdoor environment. This is not a suitable habitation for marine life. Subjecting seals to such conditions is short-sighted, unnecessary, and downright dangerous. Not to mention the egregious cost to taxpayers it will be to keep these animals, both cool enough and damp enough to put on this show. Those marine filters and coolers take it not only a lot of energy but also a lot of water.

We have abundant heat-tolerant native and non-native species capable of providing educational opportunities and entertainment. These options not only provide a safer environment for the animals but also present a chance to enlighten attendees about the local wildlife, often overlooked or considered pests.

Present circumstances require us to step forward and protect our seal population, giving them the respect they deserve. Instead, we should use this stage to educate participants about the common wildlife we often fail to appreciate or protect.

Join us in appealing to the City of Lancaster and the California Poppy Festival organisers to put aside plans to use seals for entertainment, choosing to protect and respect our marine life rather than risking its safety for momentary amusement. Sign this petition and help us make this change.
