Prevent the unjust social media ban for under 16s in the UK
The Issue
MY EXPLANATION
I remember what it was like to be under 16. I do not dismiss that sometimes, social media needs to be restricted, we can understand that. However, creating the barrier at 16 when individuals are studying for their GCSE’s, and impossible amounts of pressure are put on them with social media being a key factor in getting their mind off of constant stress. Social media brings teens together, and educates them and is used for educational matters, like school revision videos. At fifteen and sixteen you are asked about your future careers, pushed to get a job and some people are unlucky and have more responsibilities than they should at so young, being a carer for their families and so on. How can they be expected to do that but not trusted with their own phone?
Let alone the “curfew” intended with the new act. 16 and 17 years old will possibly be able to vote but not go on their phone past 8:30pm. How does that not sound ridiculous!? You’re applying to university, participating in jobs, able to drink alcohol with parental permission, join the army but you’re not allowed on your phone at ten o’clock! It is preposterous.
The topic I am most passionate about in politics is the ignorance that politicians show towards youth. They ignore the issues that are presented and instead blame them and take away their rights. I’m sick of the government pushing acts and laws that directly affect young people and don’t give them a choice in the matter! I’m not saying toddlers should be voting in elections, I’m simply pointing out the obvious hypocrisy. You ignore their cries for help about the climate change issues that will affect them and not you and then turn around and take away their communication.
Along with the surge in Tiktok and other forms of social media becoming ways for struggling young people to make money. I’ve seen countless videos of people under 16 posting videos asking for people to simply interact with it so they can help their parents with money!
I propose under 13s or under 14s. 16 is way too far and unacceptable.
CHANGE.ORGS EXPLANATION
When I look back at my teenage years, I vividly recall the profound impact that social media had on my life. It was more than just a means to stay in touch with friends – it was a platform for learning, a tool for discovering new interests and opinions, and a space to find a sense of belonging. That's why I feel compelled to speak up against the proposed ban on social media for under 16s in the UK.
The current proposal to exclude young people under the age of 16 from social media is rooted in concern for their safety, but it fails to consider the nuances of young people's online lives. Let's not disregard the incredible potential that responsible social media usage can have on educational growth and social connectivity. There are countless opportunities for learning new skills, accessing international perspectives, and engaging in meaningful conversations. Rather than an outright ban, we should seek alternatives that prioritize education on safe usage and parental guidance.
A fairer solution would involve instituting mandatory digital literacy programmes to ensure kids understand both the benefits and risks of online interactions. Schools should take an active role in promoting responsible behavior on social platforms, advising students and parents alike. In addition, implementing age-appropriate safety features on social media platforms can protect minors while allowing them to continue reaping the educational and social benefits of these tools.
Ignoring the voices of young people in a decision that impacts them so profoundly is dismissive and counterproductive. Studies have shown that nearly 90% of youth aged 12-15 in the UK use social media regularly, and 88% believe it has had a positive impact on their lives **(Ofcom, 2023)**. We must recognize that this digital landscape is where they express themselves, engage with the world, and learn about diversity and inclusivity.
Join me in urging policymakers to reconsider this approach and work toward a more balanced and informed solution that respects the potential and needs of our youth. More than prohibiting access, it's our duty to prepare them for the digital world responsibly. Let's make sure their voices aren't overlooked. Sign this petition to prevent the ban on under-16s social media use in the UK.
