Prevent the Termination of the Latin Program at Ponte Vedra High School

The Issue

Ponte Vedra High School has been elevated by its abundance of language programs. It has come to my attention that half of these programs are being cut from the budget. This would mean losing our invaluable Latin program. As a student of this program, I find this to be unacceptable.

The benefits of Latin are immense and over under appreciated. Throughout this year alone, I have noticed a tremendous improvement in my English vocabulary due to Latin. Words such as insuperable and dolor- both of which were assigned vocabulary by my English teacher- are clear derivatives. This benefit extends to grammar as we learn the application of advanced grammar as well as simple English grammar which was never covered. The cultural information taught in Latin courses provides incredibly useful information for life. While most language classes teach inapplicable culture, Latin shares valuable knowledge about history, technology and often mythology. These topics tend to be both more useful and more enjoyable for students. These notions are as quantifiable as students studying Latin are known to benefit on tests, such as the ACT. While, I may be distressed about my course displacement in the coming years it is even worse for Latin one students as most colleges require you to have taken two or more years of the same language, four years is often preferred. This sudden and harmful news has sparked reasonable grief among the students of Ponte Vedra High Schools Latin program.

As a student of this program I have been a part of this incredible community. The people involved are some of the most dedicated and wonderful individuals I have ever had the chance to know. I between our class work and competitions I have watched this group thrive.

Our Latin program provides students with incredible resources for success and has fostered an incredible community. Removing it from the county entirely would be a grave mistake. I urge you to consider the effects this will have.
