The State of Pennsylvania is currently discussing plans to shut down numerous prisons in a bid to reduce costs. While trimming the budget is crucial, closing prisons might have unintended consequences. It is necessary to project a fundamental understanding of the role these institutions play in society beyond just managing incarcerated populations. Prisons not only serve justice but also offer rehabilitation and reinsertion programs. Additionally, they generate thousands of jobs for Pennsylvanians.
