The Issue

The State of Pennsylvania is currently discussing plans to shut down numerous prisons in a bid to reduce costs. While trimming the budget is crucial, closing prisons might have unintended consequences. It is necessary to project a fundamental understanding of the role these institutions play in society beyond just managing incarcerated populations. Prisons not only serve justice but also offer rehabilitation and reinsertion programs. Additionally, they generate thousands of jobs for Pennsylvanians. Presently, the Department of Corrections employs around 15,000 individuals across 24 facilities (source: Pennsylvania Department of Corrections). The closure of these prisons could potentially lead to significant job loss and negative economic impacts. Therefore, we are calling on Pennsylvania's lawmakers to reconsider their decisions. Instead of shutting down prisons, let us look towards effective reforms for reducing incarceration rates, while still preserving the integrity of the justice system and local economies. Please sign this petition to prevent the closure of prisons and protect jobs in Pennsylvania.
