Prevent the Scrapping of Napa Valley's Antique ALCO FPA-4s and RS-11 Locomotives

The Issue

As a passionate advocate for railroad history, I am deeply concerned about the fate of our antique and rare ALCO FPA-4s and RS-11 locomotives in Napa Valley. These locomotives are not just machines; they are living testimonies to our rich history, embodying countless stories from an era gone by. Yet, these precious pieces of our past are at risk of being sent to the scrapyard.

Railroads have played an incredibly important role in shaping America's history. The ALCO FPA-4s and RS-11 locomotives are among the last remaining symbols of this heritage. They represent a time when rail was king, connecting communities across vast distances and powering America's growth.

However, it is not just their historical significance that makes these locomotives worth preserving. The ALCO FPA-4s were produced between 1958–59 with only 34 ever made, making them extremely rare (Source: American-Rails.com). Similarly, the RS-11 models were produced between 1956–1961 with less than 500 ever built (Source: Railway Preservation News).

The potential loss of these irreplaceable pieces would be a great disservice to future generations who deserve to see and understand their historical significance firsthand.

We urge Napa Valley Wine Train to consider alternatives such as donating or preserving these antique locomotives instead of scrapping them. Let us honor our past by safeguarding these historic treasures for future generations.
