The issue

Jandakot Airport Holdings' proposal to removal of 19 mature white gum trees at Jandakot Airport is an unnecessary and irreversible loss. This decision places the convenience of protecting parked vehicles above the long-term environmental and community benefits these trees provide. Mature trees cannot simply be replaced. They take decades to grow and are an increasingly rare source of food, shelter, and nesting habitat for native birds and wildlife, which are already being displaced by ongoing urban development in the area.

These trees are integral to the local ecosystem, supporting a range of species and contributing to biodiversity. The shady canopy provides a cooler microclimate and improves air quality, crucial in combating the effects of climate change. Once these trees are cut down, the environmental loss is permanent and cannot be undone with equal replacements immediately.

Jandakot Airport management must recognise the ecological importance and community value of these trees. Alternative solutions should be explored to protect parked vehicles without sacrificing our precious resources. For example, protectors could be installed over vulnerable vehicles or alternative parking arrangements could be discussed with stakeholders to avoid removing any trees.

We urge Jandakot Airport Holdings to reconsider these actions and focus on sustainable solutions that balance safety concerns with environmental responsibility. Your support is crucial to making our voices heard and ensuring the preservation of these valuable trees for future generations to enjoy.
