As a resident of Chester, I treasure the rural character and open landscapes that define our beloved town. Chester is known for its lush farmland, vibrant wildlife, and spacious properties that provide a serene oasis for many families. However, this balance is at risk due to the proposed tiny home development. Protecting our treasured environment, maintaining the integrity of this community, and preserving the rights of neighboring property owners are paramount reasons to oppose this project.

The proposed development plans to erect numerous tiny homes in an area traditionally zoned for agricultural purposes. This shift in zoning can have far-reaching consequences, not just for our rural aesthetic but also for local farmers who rely on these open lands for livelihood. This change would  lead to increased traffic, place strain on local infrastructure, and threaten the very character of our town. Many studies have shown that such developments can lead to a decrease in property values in nearby areas, adversely affecting existing homeowners.

Chester's residents have always cherished our vast open spaces and the tranquility they offer. A survey conducted by the Chester Community Organization in 2022 found that 78% of Chester residents value the rural nature of our town as a top priority, with over 65% expressing concerns over urbanization. This proposed development not only disregards the wishes of the community but risks irreversible changes to our landscape.

We urge the Planning Board to consider alternative solutions that support housing development without compromising the town’s agricultural roots. This could include focusing on sustainable developments that enhance green spaces or offering incentives for preserving farmland.
