A Saudi Arabian source has told CNN that the 18 year old Murtaja Qureiris will not be executed, but could be released in a matter of years. In other words, his life has been spared. Murtaja was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment, but has already served 5 years, having been arrested in 2014. He will be eligible for release in 2022, followed by four years of probation. While this punishment is still immensely unjust, this is as much of a victory as we could hope for. This is not the first time that such cruelty has been displayed; other minors before Murtaja were shown no mercy, and were murdered. Unfortunately, I doubt this will be the last case of human rights abuse we see in Saudi Arabia. We must continue to advocate for justice, and raise awareness of the blatant discrimination against Saudi Arabian Shia Muslims. Let's all hope that, at some point, Murtaja will return to a peaceful, loving life, considering he has had such a large part of his childhood stolen from him. Thank you to everyone who signed this petition, to those of you who shared the link, and to those who gave their thoughtful, eloquent reasons for signing. Together, we are more powerful than is comprehensible. With the help of politicians, celebrities, and everyday folk, we can make a difference.
