There is still not much to report, as of yet, however I will fill you in on what I do know.
It was recently announced that the Austrian Government is set to shut down a Saudi-funded religious centre in Vienna. The Austrian Parliament passed a resolution Wednesday, stating it would "use all political and diplomatic means available to prevent the execution". The King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue is described on its website as being 'an intergovernmental organisation that aims to use dialogue to resolve conflict'. It was co-founded by Saudi Arabia, Austria, and Spain. However, five Austrian political parties voted in favour of closing the centre, due to Saudi Arabia's constant abuse of human rights, and the obvious need to take action.
What exactly does this mean? Governments are becoming more and more aware. Austria is taking action. Our voices are being heard, and, more importantly, so are Murtaja's silent cries for help.
Perhaps this is only a small victory in the grand scheme of things, but this should give us some hope; if one country is advocating on this young boy's behalf, surely it is not long until others follow?
In terms of the court case in Saudi Arabia, I heard from one source that the fourth session of the trial was set to take place on the 13th of June, but nobody seems to have heard of any developments since then. For now, all we can do is share Murjaja's story, and continue to raise awareness, as many of you amazing people already are doing.
As I have said many times, coverage of this story is absolutely vital. Murtaja is not the first boy to be in this position, and he is most certainly not the first Shia to be so. Sadly, he will probably not be the last. However, politicians exist for a reason, and if they ignore our pleas, they are simply not doing their job. Similarly, the media are there to spread the word of breaking news, and if they ignore our pleas, they too are failing to carry out their role. Therefore, it must be our mission to speak out, to be heard, and to save a life. Nowadays, we are fortunate enough to have access to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and e-mails; all of these platforms can make more of a change than most of us could ever comprehend, so do not be afraid to use them.
