Prevent the Disposal of Kings Lynn's Historic Carnegie Building

The Issue

From the moment my family set foot in Norfolk 30 years ago, the Carnegie building has been an integral part of our lives. The first library my three-year-old son ever visited was housed within its historic walls. It was here that he discovered the joy of books, reading, and the rich tapestry of local history in the embrace of a building teeming with it.

However, our beloved building, which is a Grade 2 listed architectural marvel, is currently under threat. Authorities have labelled it 'surplus to requirements' and are considering its closure, lease, or sale. This iconic building is more than just stone and mortar; it embodies the spirit, history, and cultural heritage of Kings Lynn.

There are only 660 Carnegie libraries left in the U.K according to Carnegie UK Trust. Sales like these could risk diminishing that number and deprive future generations of experiencing living history. Losing this library will not only sever a link connecting the community to its history but will also deprive our children of the opportunity for tangible engagement with their heritage.

Now is the time to act. We must make our collective voices heard to safeguard Kings Lynn's Carnegie building. Join us in urging the council to reconsider their decision and instead, explore ways to keep this historic building accessible for everyone. Let's protect our heritage. Please sign this petition.
