The Issue
In crowded places, my anxiety skyrockets and my anger gets unmanageable. This was a major issue in a regular high school environment, which is why coming to the alternative school promising futures leadership academy in Syracuse changed my life. Here, I found a smaller, less stressful learning space that supported my needs and has significantly helped me thrive. But now, this vital institution is facing closure, and like many others, I'm being forced back into a regular high school setting—a situation that almost drowned me emotionally and mentally.
Pfla isn't just another educational facility; it's a haven for students with special needs and those who benefit from a more intimate and understanding school setting. Unfortunately, the prospect of its closure means these students, who struggle in large, traditional high schools, will lose a critical resource tailored to their unique requirements.
Statistics from the National Center for Learning Disabilities indicate that 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has learning and attention issues, yet many do not receive the necessary support in conventional schools. In our alternative school, classes are designed to cater specifically to these needs, offering personalized education plans and attention from educators who truly understand.
Moreover, research shows that smaller educational settings significantly improve the academic success and emotional well-being of students like me. The loss of this school threatens to reverse the positive strides in education and development we've made in this nurturing environment.
This isn't just about keeping the school open; it's about defending the progress and safety of students who require an alternative approach to education. The closure would mean more than the loss of a learning institution—it would be a setback in the efforts to provide equitable education in Syracuse.
Please join me in urging the decision-makers to reconsider shutting down this essential school. Your signature could play a significant role in safeguarding the future of students who depend on this alternative learning space. Sign the petition today to keep Syracuse's alternative school a reality for those who need it most.
