Prevent the closure of super dollar discount food center in Pikeville, KY
The Issue
My name is Mark Irick Jr, and I am a resident of Pikeville, KY. Like many in our community, I rely heavily on the Super Dollar Discount Food Center located conveniently near our housing authority Myers Towers. This grocery store has been a lifeline for many of us, especially those in wheelchairs, like myself. I have cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair, and the closeness and accessibility of this store allow me to maintain some level of independence. Losing this store would be a huge blow to our community.
The Super Dollar Discount Food Center is currently under threat of being bought out by the local hospital. While healthcare is undeniably important, so is access to affordable groceries for low-income families, seniors, and disabled individuals. This store not only offers essential food at discounted prices but also provides a sense of community and autonomy to those of us who struggle with mobility limitations.
According to local statistics, a significant percentage of our community relies on the services provided by this grocery store. It's not just a convenience; it is a necessity for those of us who have limited options for transportation or who cannot easily get to other grocery stores in the area. Many residents of the housing authority utilize the store for their weekly and even daily shopping needs.
We are reaching out to the local government, the hospital administration, and the developers involved in the buyout negotiations. We urge them to consider the unique needs of our community and propose alternative solutions that do not involve sacrificing this vital resource. Options such as relocating the hospital expansion, finding an alternative site for the groceries, or even incorporating the grocery store into the hospital's development plans could be viable solutions.
Our request is simple: preserve this essential grocery store, keeping it accessible for the residents who need it most. By signing this petition, you are standing with us to safeguard the autonomy, accessibility, and dignity of those who depend on the Super Dollar Discount Food Center. We believe that with enough community support and creative thinking, a solution that benefits everyone can be achieved.
Please sign the petition to help us keep our community store open.
