Prevent the Closure of Suffolk County Park Campsites in Winter Months

The Issue

As new members of the full-time camping community, we chose to invest in this lifestyle after our children moved out to form their own families. The unnecessary space in our three-bedroom home was no longer needed, as we were rarely there. This shift to mobile living was not only personal but a strategic investment into our business. However, the planned closure of Suffolk County Park's campsites from January 1st to April 1st threatens this lifestyle and leaves many full-time RV'ers in a precarious situation, with little to no alternatives for parking our homes.

According to the RV Industry Association (RVIA), the number of full-time RV’ers in America is estimated to be anywhere between 1 million to 2 million people, and some of these people depend on Suffolk County Parks for a place to live throughout the year. The harsh winter months should not leave them without a secure place to park their homes. The impact of this decision extends above and beyond the camping community, it affects the local economy as well.

By keeping the campsites open, the county supports a multi-billion dollar industry. The RV industry contributes $114 billion to the US economy, with sustained growth of 3.5% CAGR from 2018 to 2023 (Grand View Report, 2019). This closure disrupts not the economy, but more importantly, it disrupts the lives of the people who depend on these campsites as homes. We urge Suffolk County Parks to reconsider this decision and keep the campsites open all year round. It is not just about camping, it is about a way of life for many and a community that deserves recognition and support.
