Prevent the Closure of Cheddar Recycling Centre

Prevent the Closure of Cheddar Recycling Centre
The Issue
I am a local campaigner and the Councillor for Wrington (North Somerset). With MP James Heappey complicite in the cutting of fundings to local governments, causing this closer, I had to speak up! This potential closure of our local recycling centre deeply concerns me. The Cheddar Recycling Centre is not just a facility; it's an integral part of our community that aids in maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. Its closure would disproportionately affect the most vulnerable among us who rely on its proximity for their waste management needs.
The recycling centre plays a crucial role in reducing landfill waste. In 2019 alone, over 60% of household waste in Somerset was recycled or composted (Somerset Waste Partnership). This achievement would not have been possible without facilities like our Cheddar Recycling Centre.
Closing this centre will force residents to travel further to dispose their recyclables responsibly. This could lead to an increase in fly-tipping incidents which are already on the rise nationwide (Keep Britain Tidy). It also goes against national efforts to improve recycling rates and reduce carbon emissions.
Let's stand together as a community and voice our opposition against the councils decision that threatens both our environment and social equity. Please sign this petition urging local authorities to reconsider the closure of Cheddar Recycling Centre.
