The Issue

In our tightly-knit rural community, the presence of Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department is not just a service—it's a lifeline. Losing this vital service would mean more than just the absence of rapid emergency assistance; it poses real threats to our safety and well-being. For many of us, having an accessible fire department determines whether we can keep our homeowner insurance. Insurance policies often require proximity to firefighting services, and without them, countless families could face skyrocketing insurance costs or even lose coverage altogether.

More importantly, our lives, homes, and memories are at stake. In emergencies, time is of the essence. The presence of a local fire department minimizes response times, which can be the crucial difference between survival and tragedy. By losing this department, the response time in critical situations would increase alarmingly, potentially resulting in catastrophic outcomes for families and individuals in precarious situations.

Unfortunately, the closure is being justified on grounds of budgeting and funding issues. However, the cost of losing such an essential service far outweighs the financial saving purportedly achieved. It is imperative that we explore alternative solutions to address funding challenges. This could involve organizing community fundraising events, applying for grants dedicated to rural community services, and even revisiting government funding plans to prioritize essential services like our fire department. The Board of Supervisors must fund Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department's EMS due to the lack of funding will cause the fire department to lose the ability to provide the necessary services for our community.  Without the funding, people's lives will be at risk, and the community will suffer without having the responders needed to provide lifesaving services.

Our community's strength lies in its unity, and together we can make a case strong enough to ensure our voices are heard. We can campaign for the dedication these volunteers have shown over the years and affirm their significant role in keeping our community safe.

We urge local government officials and decision-makers to recognize the invaluable service that this fire department provides. By signing this petition, you are helping to safeguard not only our properties and belongings but most importantly, our lives. Let's come together to prevent the loss of our volunteer fire department and preserve the safety and security it has provided for generations.
